A fantastic night of music lies in store for the people of Armagh on Friday, the 11th of March, as part of the annual island-wide festival to celebrate the diversity of the Irish language, Seachtain na Gaeilge. The beautiful voice of Máire Ní Choilm, who hails from the Donegal Gaeltacht of Mín an Iolair in the parish of Gaoth Dobhair will capture the audience in the Market Place Theatre as her new CD Nuair a théid sé fán chroí is launched. Máire is renowned in folk circles for her exceptional talents and she is a previous winner of one of the most sought-after prizes in the Irish language singing scene, Comórtas na mBan, the seán-nós singing competition for female vocalists at the popular renowned Oireachtas festival. The new CD has already earned recognition and high praise from many of the legends of Irish language singing circles: Lillis Ó Laoire, the celebrated expert on seán-nós singing, referred to Máire’s striking style of singing, stating “Máire has a very distinctive singing voice, blending sweetness, strength and diction in a way that makes everyone sit up and take notice.” Armagh Gaels are ecstatic that a singer of such high regard will be visiting the city to perform a number of songs from her vast repertoire. Máire’s CD Nuair a théid sé fán chroí will be launched at 7pm on Friday 11 March in the Market Place Theatre, Armagh.

That same evening, Cairde teo will be organizing a night of music, dance and craic for anyone interested in the Irish language and in Irish song and music. We are delighted that local group Tara will be joining us on the evening to present some popular Irish language songs in their own unique and elegant way. The band is made up of Claire McCusker and Adam Costa, two distinguished musicians in their own right, who have earned great repute for their performances in the locality since coming together. We will also be joined by local musicians from Ciorcal Comhrá Ard Mhacha, with their mixture of songs, tunes and rhymes. The evening will also include a workshop on set dancing from Margaret Mackle and those present will have the opportunity to make use of their dancing shoes. Máire Ní Choilm will also be staying for the duration of the night and other singers and musicians will be offered the opportunity to take to the stage. Tickets are available for the night at the bargain price of £5 and they can be purchased directly from the theatre’s box office on 028 3752 1821 or by contacting Seán at Cairde teo on 028 3751 5229 or at sean@cairdeteo.com.
