Armagh Irish speakers are buzzing about POBAL’s massive 4th annual Irish language Rights and Revelry event which will take place over Friday 5th and Saturday 6th October.  Janet Muller, POBAL’s Chief Executive said, ‘Rights and Revelry is expanding and moving into the heart of Belfast City Centre.

“This year, we have new attractions for Irish speakers and those who want to find out more about the language.

Seán Ó Maoilsté, Irish language development officer with CAIRDE Teo said, ‘Irish speakers from Armagh can’t wait for this year’s event. It just grows and grows every year. As well as new bilingual bus tours, the best of music and entertainment, we will have the first ever Umbrella Parade in support of Irish language legislation, and the first ever Irish language event in the 150 year history of the Ulster Hall. In order to ensure that Armagh Gaels can take part in this huge celebration of the Irish language, CAIRDE Teo are organising a free bus for local families. The bus will leave Armagh City Hotel at 10.30am on Saturday 6 October and return at 4pm.’ To book a place on the bus, you must contact Seán on 028 3751 5229 or sean@cairdeteo.com as soon as possible as there is limited space.

Janet Muller said, “Rights and Revelry will bring hundreds of people into Belfast city centre, and we are delighted that the Belfast Chamber of Commerce and Belfast City Centre Management are supporting the event.’

Joe Jordan from Belfast Chamber of Trade and Commerce said: “The plans for this year’s festival look fantastic and look set to draw large numbers of visitors into the City.

“We alongside Belfast City Centre Management, support a number of festivals and celebrations which take place in our City throughout the year, because we feel that balanced support for all sections of the community is highly important. These festivals see thousands of residents and tourists, enjoy the many cultural highlights of the city.”

Joe concluded, “We look forward to welcoming the many visitors set for the Irish Language Festival, Rights and Revelry.”

Janet Muller said, ‘This year’s event promises to be even bigger and better than last year.  This will be a great family festival with Irish language arts, entertainment, activities, and a serious message – Irish language legislation is a shield for the language, not athreat.’

The list of amazing events during the two-day event is growing, with bus tours of key sites for the history of the Irish language in Belfast on the Friday night and Saturday afternoon, the unique Umbrella Parade gathering at Belfast City Hall ar 12 noon on the Saturday, followed by a packed afternoon of entertainment at the Ulster Hall, including the heart-stopping Belfast Circus high-octane act, juggling maestro Johnny Ó Faoláin, multi-cultural workshops and renowned Scottish Gaelic singers, Art Mac Cormaic and Ingrid Henderson topping the bill. Belfast’s own Irish language radio station, Raidió Fáilte, will carry out a live outside broadcast from the Ulster Hall between 2 -3 pm.

This year, the project has received support from Colmcille, from the Belfast City Council Festivals Fund, from the Community Relations Council as well as from Foras na Gaeilge and BRO. Janet Muller said, ‘Thanks to the support of our funders we will have the best of Irish language arts as well as a chance for Irish language groups to showcase their achievements. Rights and Revelry will bring children, young people, families, lovers of art and those looking for a bit of craic all into the City Centre. Over the weekend of the 5th and 6th October, we will put the Irish language and legislation to protect it centre stage once more, and have a fantastic festival at the same time!’
