Maidir le tairbh Chuisle an Cheoil do Phobal na Gaeilge Bhéal Feirste, bhí an méid seo le rá ag  Cormac,

‘Is toradh é Cuisle an Cheoil de chuid mhór pleanála agus tá POBAL thar a bheith sásta go mbeidh sé ag tarlú. Cruthóidh an togra iontach seo deis do thalann úr teacht chun cinn, ag ceol inár dteanga féin agus gheobhaidh siad fosta scileanna úsáideacha eile don cheol. Tugann muintir Bhéal Feirste tacaíocht iontach don Ghaeilge i gcónaí ach anois don chéad uair beidh seans ag cainteoirí óga iad fein a léiriú fríd ceol nua aimseartha. Is ábhar gliondair agus dóchais domh fás agus forbairt faoina leitheid seo de thogra.’

Dúirt Micheál Mac Giolla Gunna, Príomhoide Cholásite Feirste,

‘Tá sé d’aidhm ag Coláiste Feirste ár ndaoine óga a spreagadh le bheith ina mbaill bhríomhara de phobal na Gaeilge.  Tá lúcháir orainn go mbeidh an deis iontach seo acu a gcuid scileanna agus tuisceana faoin cheol a chothú ar féidir leo a thabhairt don phobal mar lucht éisteachta agus mar chleachtóirí ceoil.’

This July, POBAL the advocacy group for the Irish Language, will hold the first ever week-long school for Irish-speaking secondary school pupils in contemporary Gaelic music. The week long school, entitled ‘Cuisle an Cheoil’ (Pulse of the Music) will be held from the 1st to 5th July in Coláiste Feirste, at Beechmount Park in Belfast, and will culminate with a showcase concert in An Droichead Cultural Centre, Cooke Street, Belfast on 6th July. POBAL’s Cuisle an Cheoil is funded by Belfast City Council’s Arts and Heritage Fund and the Arts Council NI.

Cuisle an Cheoil will be open to all Irish speaking secondary school young people aged 11-18. Teaching and facilitation will be in Irish and the cost of the week is priced at a very reasonable £10 or £20 for a family of three and £15 for a family of two.

Cormac Ó Briain, Irish Language Arts Co-ordinator with POBAL said, ‘This is a real first in both the music and Irish language calendars. Cuisle an Cheoil will be a fun packed week for young Irish speakers . Not only that, it will also sow the seeds for a home grown Gaelic music sector. Throughout the week we will offer master classes in Irish with experienced musicians in electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, Keyboards, song writing and singing and DJ-ing. The week will also offer a series of focussed Irish language workshops with basic information for those starting off in a career in music including social media marketing, basic sound engineering and also offering practical tips and pointers on general music industry issues.’

Participants who want to  will have the chance to form music bands at the start of the week and will have the opportunity to practice their songs throughout the week leading up to a showcase concert on the Saturday.

Cormac Ó Briain went on to say,

‘Cuisle an Cheoil’ is the result of much planning and POBAL is overjoyed that it is now happening. This exciting venture will lay the ground for new talent, singing and useful music-related skills in our native language, to come through. Belfast always gives great support to the language, but now for the first time ever, Irish speaking young people will have the chance to express themselves through modern genres of music. It is a great positive feeling for us all to see this development coming to life’.

Micheál Mac Giolla Gunna, principal of the school also welcomed the project and said

‘Coláiste Feirste aims to encourage our young people to become enthusiastic members of the Irish-speaking community in all its aspects.  We are delighted that they will have this wonderful opportunity to develop their skills in and appreciation of music which they can then bring to our community as audience and as practioners in the Arts’.

Places for Cuisle an Cheoil  will be limited and students are advised to register early. Students can register with Cormac in POBAL on 028 90438132 or ofe@pobal.org
