Straw Craft 2Tá Cairde Teo ag soláthar deise do pháistí Gaelscoile le sult a bhaint as ceann de na ceirdeanna is sine in Ard Mhacha, nuair a chuirfeas siad dhá cheardlann spraíúil idirghníomhach tuíodóireachta ar siúl. Beidh na ceardlanna saor in aisce agus beidh siad ar siúl ag Ionad Eamhain Mhacha idir 11am agus 1pm Dé Sathairn 23 Bealtaine agus Dé Sathairn 30 Bealtaine. Is é Strawcraft Ireland a chuirfeas na ceardlanna i láthair agus tá a gcuid ábhar, dearthaí agus iarsmaí i ndiaidh a bheith ar taispeáint ar fud na hÉireann agus ar fud na hEorpa. Ceardaí áitiúil atá i Paul Carville atá ag obair go dian le blianta beaga anuas leis an ghné seo dár n-oidhreacht Cheilteach a fhorbairt agus aithníonn ealaíontóirí agus ceardaithe a shaineolas agus a scil, go háirithe Cleamairí Ard Mhacha a bhíonn ag comhoibriú leis ó am go chéile.

Tá na ceardlanna oscailte do pháistí idir Rang 4 agus Rang 7 agus déanfaidh siad ainmhithe beaga tuí, Babóg na Bealtaine agus na hátaí tuí a chaitheann lucht an dreoilín. Babóg tuí atá i mBabóg na Bealtaine, a thugann le chéile ré na Críostaíochta agus an ré roimh Chríostaíocht le chéile, a dhéanann ceiliúradh ar theacht an tsamhraidh agus a thugann cosaint ó na síóga. Bíonn lucht an dreoilín ag caitheamh éadaí, hátaí agus mascanna déanta de thuí agus déanann siad ceiliúradh ar an dreoilín, rí na n-éan. Déantar ceiliúradh ar Lá an Dreoilín i gContae Ard Mhacha go fóill ar Lá Fhéile Stiofáin agus tá sé ar cheann de na féiltí is mó ráchairte i nDaingean Uí Chúis i nGaeltacht Chiarraí. Má tá suim ag do pháiste freastal ar na ceardlanna seo ag Ionad Eamhain Mhacha Dé Sathairn 23 Bealtaine agus Dé Sathairn 30 Bealtaine, déan teagmháil le Seán sean@cairdeteo.com nó 028 3751 5229.

Straw Craft 4Local Irish language community development organisation, Cairde Teo, is offering an opportunity to children from local Irish medium schools to come and enjoy one of Armagh’s distinctive and ancient crafts, when they will host two fun and hands-on workshops on straw work. The workshops will be free of charge and will be held at the Navan Centre between 11am and 1pm on Saturday 23 May and Saturday 30 May. The workshops will be delivered by Strawcraft Ireland, who have exhibited their unique straw designs, products and artefacts across the country and indeed across Europe. Paul Carville is a local craftsman who has been working hard to develop this aspect of our heritage in recent years and his skill and expertise is widely recognised by artists and craftspeople, including the world-famous Armagh Rhymers, with whom Paul works alongside.

The workshops are open to children between Rang 4 and Rang 7 and they will make straw animals, straw Babóg na Bealtaine or May dolls and straw hats which are worn by lucht an dreoilín or the wrenboys. The Babóg na Bealtaine tradition involves creating a straw doll, which carries echoes of Irish Christian and pre-Christian times, to celebrate the arrival of summer and to protect the Celts against fairies and spirits. The wrenboys tradition involves dressing up in straw suits, hats and masks to celebrate the wren, the king of the birds, and takes place every year in County Armagh and in many of the Gaeltacht regions on St Stephen’s Day. If your child is interested in attending the free strawcraft workshops at the Navan Centre on Saturday 23 and 30 May, contact Seán sean@cairdeteo.com or 028 3751 5229.
