11001879_798265486923659_2697756393528686301_nCAIRDE Teo, the innovative cultural enterprise based in Armagh city, is once again on the look-out for bright young people with a sense of ambition and adventure. The group has been working closely with local community groups, sporting associations and schools in the locality since 2009 to deliver vocational, educational and recreational programmes to young people and adults. Young people, in particular, are encouraged to input ideas for projects at planning and consultation events scheduled throughout the year.

‘Raidió Mhacha’ – a new online community radio station broadcasting in Irish and English – is the latest venture to emerge from consultations with young people in the city and district. BBC Children in Need have recently weighed in behind the proposed scheme with funding, while financial support has also been received from Lloyds Bank Foundation and Foras na Gaeilge. The project is being developed in partnership with Radio Reason in Monaghan and Raidió Fáilte in Belfast.

Project Coordinator, Gearóid Ó Machail explained:

“During the community radio project, local young people are being engaged at a very early stage, prior to the establishment of the new online station. At youth group meetings in the coming weeks, CAIRDE Teo will elicit ideas around training, broadcast output and programme scheduling. Young people will be encouraged to drive programme output and to be the active agents of delivery in growing and publicising the new station. A ‘Community Radio Training Programme’ has been developed to support the creation of opportunities for young people to gain employment, work experience and vocational qualifications in the cultural and creative industries in Ireland, Scotland and beyond. The Programme is aimed at young people aged 16-18 years old who are deemed to be at risk of economic marginalisation, cultural isolation, and/or are experiencing barriers to social participation. CAIRDE Teo will provide placements for 40 participants during the one year pilot of the project.

“In developing the ‘Raidió Mhacha’ project, CAIRDE Teo has taken into consideration the state of industry within the targeted area, the lack of opportunity for many young people to obtain full-time work with proper living wages, and the continuing growth of the cultural, creative and tourism sector in Armagh City and district. The project will create an excellent opportunity to provide young people with work sampling, training and transferable skills in broadcasting, editing, presentation and interview techniques.

“The new on-line station will be an educational tool geared towards the promotion of traditional arts and culture, communication and information sharing, entertainment and income promotion. The bilingual station will strive to improve awareness and discussion of solutions to problems ranging from unemployment, low educational attainment, multi-culturalism, social isolation, and mental health issues. Local community radio in other areas has proved to be a great way of facilitating inter-generational understanding and social cohesion, by offering young people a platform to discuss issues and concerns at a local level. Online community radio is also the only way that young people with little or no experience of the broadcast media can find a voice and a means of expressing their ideas and creativity”.
