The Irish language community in Armagh recently came together to enjoy a special Irish language concert by Emma Ní Fhíoruisce in the Charlemont Hotel. Emma is a young and talented musician from Donegal Gaeltacht who has been gaining rave reviews in recent years. As well as performing as a solo artist and with friends, Emma is also a teacher with the Irish traditional music school An Crann Óg, which is based in the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht. Emma, who was invited by CAIRDE Teo, sang as part of the Culture Night celebrations, thanks to support from Oireachtas na Gaeilge. Emma sang a mixture of traditional songs from her native area and Irish translations of a number of popular English language songs.
A couple of other Irish language events were held on Culture Night in Armagh. Réamonn Ó Ciaráin, Regional Manager with Gael Linn, spoke about the influence of the Irish language on the local dialect of the English language. There was also a special event for local Irish speaking children earlier in the day, when CAIRDE Teo organised a special Irish language storytime in conjunction with Armagh City Library.
