A new youth club for young Irish speakers attending local Irish medium schools is set to get underway on Thursday 22 September. The youth club, which is open to children from Rang 4 to Rang 7 will take place between 7pm and 8pm at Cathedral Road Recreation Centre every Thursday thereafter. The youth club follows on from the success of the Irish language summer camp, Campa Mhacha, which was held in July at the Navan Centre. The new club will follow the same format as Campa Mhacha with a number of activities including art, sport, games, songs and music, and quizzes.
The aim of the new youth club for primary school-aged children, Cumann Óige Ard Mhacha, is to encourage local children to use spoken Irish outside of the school environment and to provide a programme of youth work through the medium of Irish. The club receives partial financial assistace from the Education Autority’s Youth Service.
The Cumann na bhFiann Irish language youth club for secondary school pupils will also get underway again on Friday 23 September at the Cathedral Road complex from 6pm to 7.30pm. This youth club is open to students attending the Irish medium unit at St Catherine’s and former students of Irish medium primary schools who now attend English-medium post-primary schools. New members would be very welcome, particularly those who have just left Rang 7 and moved to secondary school.
