Young Armagh Gaels will be delighted to hear that the popular Irish medium youth club, Cumann Óige Ard Mhacha, will make its return on Thursday 21 September. The youth club, which is open to children from Rang 4 to Rang 7 proved a massive hit last year, and will again be based at the Cathedral Road Recreation Centre every Thursday evening from 6.30pm to 8.00pm. The club, which is organised by Armagh-based Irish language community group, CAIRDE Teo, will this year link up with national Irish language youth group Ógras to deliver an exciting programme of youth work, activities and trips to Irish speakers attending local Gaelscoileanna.
The aim of Cumann Óige Ard Mhacha is to encourage local children to use their spoken Irish outside of the school environment and to provide an opportunity to take part in a wide variety of fun and exciting activities to assist with their personal development. The club receives partial funding from the Education Authority’s Youth Service and from Foras na Gaeilge’s Youth Activities Scheme. This year’s club will also link up with Ógras, who coordinate a number of Irish medium youth clubs throughout the country and it is hoped that a number of exchanges can take place with some of the other clubs during the year. The registration fee is £15 and the cost of attending the club is just £1 per week.
The club leaders are looking forward to welcome back many of last year’s members, but are extending a special invitation to new members to come along as well. Cairde Teo is also inviting any young Irish speakers interested in volunteering in the Irish medium youth sector to contact the club. Volunteers will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge of youth work and take part in courses, all of which will assist with CVs, personal statements and CAO and UCAS forms. If you would like to volunteer, you can contact Seán on firstname.lastname@example.org or through the Cairde Teo Facebook or Twitter pages.
Armagh will also host a second Irish medium youth club for young people at post-primary school. The club, which is run by Cumann na bhFiann, caters for young people attending the Irish medium unit at St Catherine’s College and former students of local Irish medium primary schools who now attend English medium post-primary schools. Cumann na bhFiann Ard Mhacha would like to welcome all new and existing members, especially those who have just moved from primary to post-primary school. The Cumann na bhFiann club will take place every Thursday at Cathedral Road Recreation Centre from 8pm to 9.30pm from Thursday 21 September.
